india will be developed in the true sense when...

...a saree clad indian woman will no longer be scared of getting onto an escalator. i am making this statement at the risk of sounding too snooty. but i seriously feel so. i spent a little time this afternoon at a pretty upscale mall. i made some interesting observations which made me feel that though india is way ahead of the US as far as mobile technology is concerned, however, it's still gotta do some serious catching up.

i saw this bunch of young college going girls and boys looking at a chocolate fountain in a store and looking seriously amazed. i am not saying that i am the most learned indian on this earth or the one who's seen the world more than anyone else has seen. but still...

and the most common scene that i see each time i go to a place where there's an escalator. my mom does it too. she too is scared of getting onto an escalator. even today at the mall, this lady just refused to get onto the escalator. the young boy with her coaxed her a lot, almost looking embarassed. though the lady tried to advance towards the escalator, but just would not get onto it.

probably thats because back in the day there would be just 2 sets of escalators in the entire city - one at the airport and the other one a some 5-star hotel. considering that very little population of indians ever traveled by plane and that only a select few visited the 5-star hotels, they never got a chance to test drive the escalator.

i hope one day soon all older indian women shed away the fear of the escalator and escalate india to being a developed country!

yes! i am one of the biggest fans of the radio. how many people do you know have a car music system but no cd's, mp3's or audio cassettes (old school) in their car. i am just one of them. even if i do have cd's in the car, they would be catching dust in the glove compartment, because life's pretty simple for me. if there is one radio station that i am hooked enough to, i need nothing else. when i was in the US, i was hooked on to kiis fm (102.7) in southern california - it plays in LA and OC. many people think that this station is too girly and plays the same songs over and over again. don't matter to me. i would religiously listen to the shows on the way to work, and on the way home in the evening. i would know the rj's, the 8:20 birthday game, some reality-type-fake-tears show on the radio in the morning and the works. they say that if you listen to kiis fm for a couple hours at a stretch, you would have listened to the same songs twice. i was still hooked on....

monsoon's here

here comes the season that mumbaikars love to hate. yes, this evening was the official arrival of monsoon in the city. it had drizzled a bit couple days back though. it started building up since morning when the sky started getting cloudy. by evening, it got really dark and at around 7 in the evening, came down the Gods from the sky pouring like crazy on the city. i was actually in two minds before i headed out for a round of swim to the nearby pool. i got in the car and drove a little bit. by the time i was close to my destination, the rain was banging heavy and hard on the roof of my car. i actually got intimidated, turned my car around and headed back home. i had kept an umbrella that we just got out of the attic last week (its a ritual everyone follows at the end of summer). though i had the umbrella and i had to walk only from my car to my home, i couldn't avoid getting wet. here i was taking all the possible care making sure i don't get wet. on the other hand there were ...

don't get deceived by the title of this one. has got nothing to do with shopping or retail etc. what i am gonna talk about is a sweet little indian (or maybe asian) culture that tends to get nasty at times. we all go out with friends and family out for lunches and dinners on special occasions. it's all cool when you go out with friends, but when you go out with family, especially your wife's relatives, it gets a little tricky. there's usually a fight about who's gonna pay the bill. mind you, i said a 'sweet indian culture' - so the fight is not because nobody wants to pay the bill...its because everyone wants to be the one to pick up the tab and treat everyone else. last time when we out for lunch with our relatives, i was given strict instructions by my wife not to let anyone pay the bill this time. it almost came to the extent of her doubting my smartness. she's like, we have invited everyone for lunch - so you better make sure you're the one who p...
