Exploring Germany’s Black Forest: A Family Adventure of Bikes & Trails
Our recent family trip to Germany turned out to be a perfect blend of adventure, exploration, and togetherness. Exploring the Black Forest through bike rides and hikes, while also experiencing everyday life in a different country, made the trip truly special.
We recorded all our outdoor activities on Strava, and here’s a compilation of our adventures:
🚴 1. Dreisemtal-Radweg Cycle Path Ride - Hiring cycles for a full-day ride in the Black Forest isn’t easy—we had that sense even before we started. After multiple hits and misses, we finally stumbled upon Wunderle Cycle Shop in Kirchzarten and set off on our ride. Initially, navigating unfamiliar paths and sharing the road with traffic felt unnerving. But as we eased into it, the ride turned magical, taking us through towns, highways, rivers, farms, and dense forests. It was an unforgettable start to our journey.
🥾 2. Feldberg Hike - This was the mother of all hikes on our Black Forest trip.
Niki’s pre-trip research (and even AI suggestions) kept pointing us to Feldberg. Known mainly as a ski resort, it felt quiet and almost surreal in spring. The 12.5 km hike was unpredictable, with very few hikers completing the full loop.
The reward at the end, Feldsee Lake, was absolutely stunning.
🌄 3. Schlossberg Hill Hike - If you visit Freiburg, a hike up Schlossberg Hill is almost certain. It’s an easy and rewarding hike, offering panoramic views of Freiburg on one side and the Black Forest on the other. The viewing tower at the top adds to the experience, and the biergarten on the way down is a perfect stop. We ended the outing with a relaxed picnic in the park. It was simple and memorable.
💧 4. Gertelbach Waterfalls Hike - This was easily one of the most scenic waterfall hikes we’ve experienced. Set in the thick Black Forest, the Gertelbach Waterfalls offered countless photo opportunities. Being a long weekend, there were plenty of tourists, but what stood out was seeing everyone from 6-month-old babies to 80-year-olds enjoying the hike. We started downhill and climbed back up - a lovely, well-rounded experience.
⛰️ 5. Merkur Mountain Hike Merkur Mountain, overlooking Baden-Baden, is a popular tourist destination. Since we had to cancel our biking plan that day, the kids were understandably disappointed. So we improvised—while Niki took the funicular up, the rest of us hiked. The top was busy due to the long weekend, but it was fascinating to see the outdoor culture in full swing - mountain bikers riding up and down, and even paragliding activities. We regrouped at the top and descended together.
🚴 6. Rhine River Ride - Finding bike rentals in the Black Forest continued to be a challenge, until Niki's persistence paid off again. We found Helmut, who runs Baden Bike Rental from his garage in Bühl. His bikes were impeccably maintained and equipped with Bosch electric assist, making long rides effortless and enjoyable. Reaching the Rhine River and cycling alongside it for kilometers was truly surreal.
🚲 7. Munich Solo Ride -The best way to explore a new city, especially in Europe, is on a bike. My solo ride through Munich was a highlight. The city is beautiful, incredibly clean, and extremely bike-friendly. Exploring it on two wheels made the experience even more immersive and enjoyable.
Final Thoughts If you’re traveling from India and want to explore the Black Forest through hiking and biking, this itinerary is a fantastic template. It blends adventure, scenic beauty, and cultural immersion into one unforgettable experience. Whether it’s cycling along rivers, hiking through dense forests, or simply soaking in the landscapes—the Black Forest truly delivers. Highly recommended—you won’t be disappointed.
