gradual death of conventional TV
the other day i was reading the newspaper (yes, in this part of the world, the newspaper is quite prevalent) and i realized that it was really difficult for me to concentrate and complete one article before i went on to the next one. the tv was also playing in the background. the person who had the remote control kept flipping channels making it even harder for me to concentrate on either.
i went online to surf the internet. it is a daily ritual for me to come home in the evening and spend time surfing the net while the tv is going on in the background. these days, even while surfing the net, i realise that it is difficult for me to stick to one site and do whatever i am doing on that site. my mind keeps wandering and i subconsiously open 2-5 sites and flip through them randomly.
there is a pattern developing in me which i call 'attention deficiency'. i am pretty sure that would be the case with a lot of people in today's world who are regular meaningless surfers (wanderers) like i am. seriously, there is so much information out there annd so many place to go while you're sitting on the couch or relaxing in your bed, it is very difficult to stay glued to one channel or one medium.
this is what leads me to strongly believe that television with its uniform format of half hour/one hour shows will eventually die giving way (in a big way) to on-demand-one-minute entertainment. i am talking about the youtubes and the video sites of today. in the next 4-5 years, these gazillion one-minute videos will become such a part of everybody's lives that they will no longer have the patience to stick around for a half hour/one hour show on television. more and more people would want to see amateur videos that are unconnected/unrelated with the previous 10 vidoes they just watched. everybody at home will be watching different stuff at different times.
